Iowa Pilot Dies in NW Indiana Light Aircraft Crash

A pilot from Iowa died after his light aircraft crashed in Northwest Indiana on Monday, police said. The 69-year-old man was the only person aboard the plane when it crashed in a field near Roselawn, about 20 miles southeast of Gary, Indiana State Police said.

The pilot was identified as Steven Kuehl of Marion, Iowa.

The plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Crown Point Airport in Lake County, Indiana, state police said. The aircraft was headed to the Iowa City Municipal Airport in Iowa City, Iowa, but crashed about a mile from the airport.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
