Insects' Unique Breathing System
The Branching Tubes of Insect Respiration
Insects, unlike humans who rely on lungs for gas exchange, utilize a complex network of branching tubes for respiration. These tubes, known as tracheae, extend throughout the insect's body, directly delivering oxygen to their tissues and organs.
Spiracles: The Gates to the Tracheal System
The tracheal system is connected to the outside environment through small openings called spiracles. Located along the insect's body, these spiracles allow air to enter and exit the tracheae. Insects have a varying number of spiracles, ranging from two pairs in primitive species to over ten pairs in more complex ones.
