Salman Rushdie Wins 2023 German Peace Prize

Author Honored for His Defense of Freedom of Speech

75th Frankfurt Book Fair to Host Award Ceremony

The Board of Trustees of the German Peace Prize Foundation has announced that Salman Rushdie has been awarded the 2023 German Peace Prize. The renowned author will be honored for his unwavering defense of freedom of speech and his commitment to addressing societal issues.

Rushdie was born in Bombay in 1947 and is best known for his novel "The Satanic Verses," which provoked controversy and a fatwa from the late Iranian leader Ruhollah Khomeini. Undeterred, Rushdie has continued to write and speak out against extremism and censorship.

The German Peace Prize is awarded annually to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the promotion of peace and the protection of human rights. Rushdie's selection reflects the jury's recognition of his courage and determination in the face of adversity.

"Salman Rushdie is a symbol of freedom of expression and a tireless advocate for human rights," said Ulrich Wilhelm, Chairman of the German Peace Prize Foundation. "His work has inspired countless people around the world and has helped to create a better understanding of the importance of dialogue and tolerance."

Rushdie will receive the award at the 75th Frankfurt Book Fair, which will be held from October 18-22, 2023. The award ceremony will take place on October 20th, and Rushdie will give a speech entitled "The Future of Free Speech."
